T-Shirt Neckline Tutorial Details

This tutorial is pretty simple, I would telephone call it avant-garde beginner friendly, or even adventurous beginner friendly.

I recommend using a serger for this alteration. Sergers are not hard to use, I hope! This is how I tailor neckbands for my clients.

However, you can use a regular sewing car if you don't have a serger.

This method of lowering the neckline will not work with t shirts that have jump necklines, such as in the paradigm below. (Unless you cut off the original neckband and replace it with an entirely new 1, which is totally practice-able!)

How To Plow A Crew Cervix Into A Scoop Neck (Lower T Shirt Neckline)

Step ane. Decide How Much Yous will Lower Neckline

Try the t shirt on and determine how much you desire to lower the neckline. (I lowered mine nearly 1.25 inches)

The number of inches down from the original neckline you want to make your new neckline determines how you will detach the neckband and sew it back on.

  • If you are going to lower the neckline well-nigh 1.25 inches or less, you can detach only the front half of the neckband (discrete from shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the forepart.) and information technology will stretch plenty without too much warping. This is easier than detaching the whole thing.
  • If you lot are going to lower the neckline 1.5-two.5 inches or and so, or your neckband is not very stretchy, it is probably wise to detach the entire collar so you have more ease to re-stretch it when you run up information technology back on.
  • If y'all want to lower the neckline much further, OR you are cutting off a bound neckband, you volition demand to create a new neckband entirely that is a couple inches smaller in circumference than the measurement of your new neckline.

Pace 2. Unstitch the Collar

Many T Shirts accept topstitching (stitches on the right side of the garment) nigh the neckband to stabilize them. Some don't.

If yours does, the starting time step is to unpick the entire topstitching carefully with your seam ripper.

Footstep 3. Detach the neckband from the shirt

To disassemble the neckband from the shirt, y'all will have to unpick the serged stitches. Unpicking serged stitches seems ho-hum, but it is actually very simple if you exercise it right.

Examine the serged hem and locate the 2 stitch lines that are directly. There is one in the centre, and 1 on the lesser.

Recall to proceed in mind how much of the neckband you need to detach, half, or the whole thing. I only did the front half.

Insert your seam ripper into the straight stitches, beingness careful not to cutting the looped threads.

Seam rip the direct threads and pull them out of the shirt. It may assist to rip them every few inches or and then, so they are easier to pull.

After removing the straight threads, the looped threads will pull right off.

The section where the straight stitches have been removed falls correct off.

The neckband is now discrete.

Step 4. Cutting the New Neckline

Fold your T shirt in half then the center front end line is on the fold. Make certain to line upwardly the shoulder seams well, or the neckline volition not be symmetrical when you cut it.

fold T shirt in half

The total distance you desire to lower your neckline is the altitude from the raw neck edge you will brainstorm cut, on the fold.

For instance, to lower the neckline 1.25 inches, first cutting 1.25 inches down on the fold.

As you cut, gradually slope the curve up to the shoulder seams. You lot should not cutting through the shoulder seams, simply end right at the indicate where the shoulder seam meets the neckband seam.

Cut the new lower neckline

You want this curve to exist gradual and circular so it makes a nice scoop neck. If it helps you, you can turn the T shirt inside out and very lightly mark it with a pencil.

Stride 5. Pin the Neckband to the shirt

Identify a pin on the fold of the neckband and likewise the t shirt, to marking the centers.

Place pins on neckband folds

Flip the neckband back over the right side of the shirt and align the raw edges. Pin them together.

This pin marks the heart of the neckband. It volition assist yous sew it on if you besides pin the quarter way points of the collar (halfway betwixt the center pin and the shoulder seam).

The quarter bespeak on the neckband volition be a shorter distance than the quarter point on the shirt. When pinned, the shirt should have extra fabric loose on both sides of the pin.

Step half-dozen. Reattach the collar to the T shirt

To sew the neckband to the shirt, you volition accept to stretch the neckband until it lies flat on the shirt as y'all sew. Use one mitt pulling the shirt from backside the presser foot, and ane mitt stretching information technology in front.

Sew slowly, and brand certain to use a stretch stitch. (Like a zig zag stitch). I serged mine.

The edge of the knit fabric will probably have a tendency to roll, so brand certain the flatten it equally yous go.
